Everybody seems to want the latest model of everything - the latest car, the latest computer, the latest bestseller. Anything seen as not the up to the minute must-have purchase is relegated to bargain basement and seen as inferior. However, second hand does not mean low quality. Take classic books. Some of the greatest works of fiction were written years ago and have been read far more than man popular novels of today. It is the same with cars. There are certain models that are much sought after, years after they have gone off the market. In fact, because they are no longer produced they are seen as limited edition and therefore attract a certain status that high quantities of current models do not have. There is a certain fashionable sensibility, for example, in not being swayed by modern trends. Many car fanatics look to older style models just as literary types leaf through classic books in darkly lit cafes.

Classic cars are reinterpreted in newer models just as the most worthy literary tomes are reprinted and given a redesigned cover to appeal to readers of today. Of course, on the flip side, the beauty of second hand, whether that be cars or books or pretty much anything, is that they often do not have the added costs tagged onto them which first time buys do. They are not subject to mass marketing which is undoubtedly a substantial part of the costs. The higher the costs, of course, the more prices are bumped up. With many products the consumer is paying for the name or the brand or the fact that the product has only just been released into the market. They are, in short, paying for the marketing. Obviously, the limited edition aspect of second hand classic books and cars means a high price too. But the great majority of older cars can be bought and are more easily afforded than newer models. Some people need a car just to get from A to B but sometimes that is all that it is needed for.
